How to think more positively

Positive thinking + positive action = success. Today, our Customer Transformation Coach, Candida, discusses how you can think more positively in order to influence the success of your New You Plan weight loss journey.

How to think more positively

Positive thinking is a very powerful tool but means absolutely nothing if you don’t follow it up with positive actions.

Diet can be a time of deprivation and sacrifice or an exciting time of transformation and self-empowerment. You need to take control and fast track your way to feeling happy and proud about how you look. Positive action alongside positive thinking is the key to success in your weight loss journey.

Here is a little exercise created by Mack Machowicz to demonstrate my point.

When you have a chance, go to a quiet room that has a light switch and bring a chair. Now close the door, turn off the light switch and take the chair and put it several feet from the light switch. Sit in the chair. Now with all of your vast power of positive thought, think about the light switch turning on. Take as long as you need… this drill has been done with rooms full of people, sometimes with as many as a couple thousand and not once has the light switch turned on by people thinking positively about it.

But, the second you get up off your butt and flick the switch on, instantly there is light. Now, do you understand?

How to think more positively

Many people think that positive thinking is all you actually need, but it does not generate fear. Going after what we want in life, our hopes and dreams and losing weight can be a little frightening. We have to take on the risk and face the fear to achieve these goals. This means action. Do not let the fear stop you from doing this.

You have to learn to think exceptionally. Great performance is not about continually repeating mantras to yourself. However, if you do fall off track, it’s about reminding yourself to get back on the horse.

John Eliot P.H.D wrote:

“Think positively is generally good advice, but it also can be an obstacle to exceptional thinking. Positive thinking tends to be goal-oriented. It also tends to put performers in the training mindset, analysing their stream of consciousness. Exceptional thinkers learn to trust their consciousness. They teach themselves the power of positive action. They don’t stop to think about how great the act is going to be. Instead, they act.”

So instead of channelling your energy into thinking about your goals, you need to push your energy in to acting upon your goals. Here’s how…

Personal feedback

We need to give ourselves feedback in order to progress. Every improvement, every pound you lose will stimulate your brain to feel more motivated and eager to continue. It’s this positive action that reinforces your brain that your action is producing great results and getting you closer to your goal.

Measuring your progress

This is really important! If I asked you how you had done today with your diet, there would be no point in telling me you had thought positively about it. It would be better to show me a journal with what you had eaten, how you felt, any measurements you had taken etc. It’s fabulous to think positively about how great you are going to look and feel when you get to goal but it’s not the same as actually DOING what it takes to get there.

Be realistic

Negative things can and do happen to all of us. We cannot positively think these undesirable events away. You have to take action to make them go away. We have all heard of the saying: ‘When life gives you lemons, make lemonade’ – this is a positive action. A positive self-image goes a long way to losing weight; however, you’ve still got to put in the energy to exercise and follow the New You Plan to become truly healthy.

Which step have you reached? What are you going to do to get to step 6?

  1. I can’t do it.
  2. I want to do it.
  3. How do I do it.
  4. I’ll try to do it.
  5. I can do it.
  6. I’m doing it!
