Kathleen is from Winston Salem, North Carolina, USA.

Born February 28th 1997, making her 19 years old.

Kathleen has been swimming from such a young age and has trained incredibly hard for many events, Local, National and International levels. She has been unsuccessful a number of different times but it never stopped her from working harder to get to where she wanted to be!

Kathleen had to beat incredible odds to get her where she is today, she was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. For those of you who are not sure what Crohn’s disease is, well it is a condition that causes painful inflammation in the digestive system or gut. It is a chronic condition, which means that it is ongoing and life long, it can come in stages, the person may suffer for a few weeks and they could be in remission when it calms down but it never goes away.

Although battling Crohn’s disease has resulted in various treatments and even threatened her swimming career in the past, Baker said she hoped her journey inspired, as dealing with adversity has made her appreciate the sport even more.

She was unable to swim in all the events that she wanted to, she has limited herself to her one Olympics specialty, which is the 100m backstroke. Kathleen Baker defied Crohn’s disease and her doctors when she took silver during Monday’s 100-meter backstroke.

“So Incredible! I mean I went a best time and just got a medal!” Baker said after her heat. “I couldn’t even put into words how happy I am and how grateful for the amount of support I have here from the teammates and coaches along the way. It just takes a village for everyone to get me here and I couldn’t be happier.”
