Stop waiting until you reach your goal to be happy! Here, we share 10 easy ways to fall in love with yourself right now!

You are ready. You have your New You Plan packs, your water is waiting and you’ve bought a new pair of trainers in a bid to reach those 10,000 steps but is there something you have forgotten? Actually, yes. According to the latest research there is another key factor to consider: your emotional health. In particular, how do you feel about YOU?

When you are losing weight it’s easy to get fixated on the body parts you dislike. For any diet to work, you need to fall in love with your body. Yes, the one you’ve got right now.

The latest science agrees that our thoughts, actions, and moods may play an even bigger role in our health and general wellness than previously believed.

So, it’s probably no big surprise that positive thinking and weight loss success are integral to one another.

Positive thinking plays a significant role in our weight loss efforts. Think about it: It’s impossible to lose weight when we focus on how fat and unhappy we are.

Why? Because these kinds of negative thoughts lead us to succumb to our cravings, overeat and skip out on our daily dose of exercise.

Positive thoughts, on the other hand, can increase our motivation and energy levels, propelling us toward our weight loss goals.

In fact, when it comes to losing weight, our mind can be an extremely powerful and effective tool. A study in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology found that the more confidence participants had in their ability to achieve those goals —the more weight they dropped. People who successfully lost weight believed in themselves and their ability to stick with the weight loss approach they’ve chosen.

Positive thoughts are empowering. A negative attitude can make losing weight difficult, if not impossible. Beating ourselves up every time we look in the mirror, obsessing about what we can’t eat and approaching our exercise routine with a sense of dread are all ways that negative thought patterns can sabotage our weight loss efforts.

Having a negative image of ourselves leads to feeling powerless, depressed or unmotivated, making it more likely we’ll skip our daily walk or eat a bag of something we shouldn’t to feel better. But acknowledging those feelings and transforming those thoughts into something more positive can actually help us reach our goals. Here’s how to fall in love with you.

10 ways to love yourself right now

1. Start the day with praise

Spend the first precious minute of every day praising yourself. That way, even if no one else does (though they will, once the weight starts falling off), it matters less. Keep goals, inspiring images, affirmations and quote cards where you can see them, this helps remind us to adopt a positive mindset.

2. Celebrate small joys

We’re all prone to waiting for ‘big’ moments – like an exciting birthday or getting a promotion. Remember to reflect on the wonderful little things that are already happening right now. Celebrate the wins, no matter how small they seem.

3. Use positive pick-me-ups

Feel-good movies, an uplifting book, an inspiring podcast, a stress-busting boxing session or calm-inducing yoga class, a laugh-out-loud catch-up with a friend, cute YouTube clip, motivational music… what’s your go-to when you’re feeling down or stuck?

4. Be thankful

Studies show that counting your blessings boosts well-being and optimism. Log your gratitude in your New You Magical Me journal or thank someone who’s made a difference to your life through a note, a call or face to face. Get in touch with your body show it how much you adore it (rolls and all) by lavishing it with care and attention. Treat yourself to a scented body lotion and massage it in after a shower as a way of saying thank you for what your body does (carries you around, allows you to enjoy all the wonderful things life has to offer), not just for the way it looks.

5. Keep good company

Surround yourself with people who have a positive influence and lift your mood and self image. Emotions are infectious. Pop on to Secret Slimmers for a motivating boost.

6. Note three good things about your day

These should be things you had an active role in controlling – this can be as simple as waking up early to enjoy a healthy New You breakfast. Do this for seven days and see how you feel. This retrains your brain to focus on all the little good things that we tend to ignore.

7. Counter negative self-talk

When you catch yourself saying unhelpful things in your head, try to say several positive things in response. On that note, get out of the habit of pointing out your flaws to others and not accepting compliments. ‘Oh this old thing… a fiver in the sale’ or ‘I’m just wearing a lot of make up, I don’t look like this normally’. Next time someone compliments you, say ‘thank-you’ and make a note of it in your head so you can remember it later.

8. See yourself through the eyes of a friend

When we view ourselves negatively, we’re often looking through an unrealistic lens. Be your own best friend. Every time you look in a mirror, find one thing you love about yourself instead of being critical. Imagine you are talking to your best friend– what would you say to them? You certainly wouldn’t rip them to shreds and point out every little flaw so why do you do it to yourself? Act as though you love who you are – bumps, curves and all. How would you stand? How would you move? Assume the confidence. Even if you don’t believe it at first, act as though it’s true. Eventually your mind will catch up and believe in it for real. And your success on plan will increase. Honestly.

9. Write yourself a love letter

Get the pen and paper out or fire up the computer and write a caring letter to yourself and read it regularly, especially when you’re feeling self-critical.
