From Desperation to Determination: Samm’s Motivation to Change

Nicola: So tell us, how much weight have you lost so far?

Samm: At this moment, I’ve lost pretty much exactly 6st. Back in October, my peak loss was 6st 12lbs. So I was 2lbs off the 7st mark, but I just didn’t make it. I’ve been up and down a bit since then, but since the New Year, I’m back on track and I’ve lost 9lbs to take my loss to 6st.

Nicola: What led you to start on the plan?

Samm: It was kind of desperation, if I’m honest. Like almost everyone on the plan, I’ve been a yo-yo dieter most of my life. I had some successes on various plans but never really kept it off. After having three children, it got harder to get the weight off again. I was feeling rubbish, and nothing looked good on me.

The turning point came when a friend posted online about going to a foreign country for weight loss surgery. I have a real phobia of surgery because many years ago, in my twenties, I had a routine operation that went wrong. I ended up spending some nights in intensive care, had to have blood transfusions, and was really very poorly. As a result, I’ve developed a real fear of surgery.

Despite this fear, when I read my friend’s post about weight loss surgery, for a split second, I actually considered it. That’s when I realized how desperate and unhappy I was with my weight. I thought to myself, “If I’ve got to the point where I’m so desperate that I’m actually even thinking about surgery, then it’s time to do something.”

I’d been on Slim and Save before with success, but when I looked for it, it had gone. That’s when I found The New You Plan instead. I was working in a school at the time, so I decided to start on the first day of the summer holidays to really focus on it. In those first six weeks off school, I lost nearly 2st.

Navigating Challenges and Celebrating Victories

Nicola: How did you find the first week on plan?

Samm: The first week is always hard, whether it’s your first time or coming back after a break. You get headaches and withdrawal from sugars, but I found paracetamol helpful. I also prefer warm water over cold water. I got into a routine quickly, writing things down and completing a spreadsheet at the end of each day. Keeping busy and treating myself to a nice bath in the evening helped distract me from cravings.

I used the support groups for advice and distraction. Instead of reaching for something to eat, I would read through other people’s posts and remind myself why I was doing this. Seeing the initial weight loss in that first week was also a great motivation.

Nicola: Do you have a favourite non-scale victory so far?

Samm: One of my best non-scale victories was being able to get in the bath again. Other significant ones include fitting into theme park rides, weighing less than my husband, getting back into my pre-pregnancy jeans, and being able to wear my engagement ring again. A fitness-related victory was completing a full Zumba class with arm weights.

The Transformation Beyond the Scale

Nicola: How has the plan changed your life?

Samm: There have been so many changes. I have more energy and stamina for everyday tasks. A significant difference is being able to go on all the rides at theme parks, which I couldn’t do before due to size restrictions. My confidence has also improved dramatically. I applied for and got a new job in a completely different environment, which I wouldn’t have had the confidence to do before. I’m also participating in theatre productions, something I had stopped doing because I couldn’t fit into the costumes anymore.

Nicola: What has being on plan taught you?

Samm: I’ve learned that this is a lifelong journey, not just about losing weight but maintaining it. I’ve also learned to accept that it’s okay not to always be perfect or positive. The plan has taught me to be more honest about my struggles and to appreciate my progress. I’ve also discovered a new interest in clothes and makeup, which I didn’t care much about when I was larger.

Looking Forward: Goals, Advice, and Favourite Meals

Nicola: What’s next on your New You journey?

I’m not at my final goal yet, and I’m not entirely sure what that goal is. Initially, I was aiming to lose 7st, but as I progressed, I thought I could go for 8st. Currently, I’m focusing on getting into size 14 bottoms and medium tops. I’m not fixated on a specific number, but rather on how I feel and look. I want to start focusing on fitness. I’d like to start incorporating more exercise, particularly weight training, to build strength and improve my overall health. I plan to continue using The New You Plan products as part of my maintenance strategy.

Nicola: Do you have any favourite meals or snacks on the plan?

Samm: My go-to breakfast is either a Cafe Latte Shake or Blueberry and Apple Smoothie with a Pineapple Boost. For lunch, I usually have a Shake at work – either White Chocolate and Raspberry or Hazelnut. My favourite Bars are the Apple and White Chocolate, and any of the peanut ones. For savoury meals, I enjoy the Spaghetti Bolognese, Egg Omelette, and the Burger Mix. My favourite sweet options include the Salted Caramel Cake and Chocolate Brownie, especially when prepared in an air fryer.

Nicola: If you could go back to when you first started the plan, what advice would you give yourself?

Samm: I would advise taking measurements from the start, not just relying on weight. I wish I had been more adventurous in trying different meals early on. Setting up an Instagram page to document my journey really helped me stay focused. Most importantly, I wish I had started earlier and not spent so much time talking myself out of it. Remember, it’s okay to fail and learn from it. Don’t let fear of failure hold you back from starting your journey. Also, don’t underestimate the importance of water intake. It’s crucial for weight loss and overall health on this plan.

Nicola: Any final thoughts you’d like to share?

Samm: I just want to emphasise how much this journey has changed my life. It’s not just about the weight loss, but about the confidence and new opportunities it has brought me. I’m doing things I never thought possible before, like participating in theatre productions and considering new fitness challenges. I’m excited for what the future holds and grateful for the support I’ve received along the way. Remember, timing is important when starting your journey. Find a time when you can really focus on your goals. And don’t be afraid to start small – even changing two meals a day is a good start. The most important thing is to begin your journey towards a healthier you.
