Looking After Yourself During Coronavirus Crisis

There is no doubt that we are going through a very stressful time in the world with Coronavirus spreading rapidly, and we have very little knowledge about it.

This is something that none of us have ever seen before, and nobody really knows what to expect. But to say that we are in for a challenging few months ahead is more realistic than pessimistic.

It is important that we all do our best to look after our physical, mental and emotional health at this time.

PANIC IS BAD BUT OVER REACTION IS GOOD

Full on panicking is not going to be productive, but neither is a nonchalant attitude.

Stay calm and make a plan.

When making important decisions it is better to overreact than under react. The risk reward ratio of how you react to coronavirus makes over reacting a no brainer.

The worst case scenario to overreacting is you end up staying away from people / older family members and have a few extra non perishable foods in the kitchen cupboards.

The worst case scenario to under-reacting is you get coronavirus and pass it to others who might get very sick or even die.

DO WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL SAFE AND DO NOT WORRY WHAT OTHERS THINK

The schools in Ireland have closed down, the schools in Northern Ireland have not closed down. I made the decision to take my girls out of school today. I work from home anyway, and felt it was the right decision for me.

I did think “what will people think of me for doing that” for one minute, until I remembered that it is my life and I live with the consequences of my decisions, no one else does.

Don’t worry about what other people are doing. Everyone is different. You do what makes you feel safe. It is different for everyone, so do what feels right for you. No one knows exactly what we are dealing with; so trust your gut, take action and stay calm.

MAKE PLANS AND GET PREPARED

Make a plan to social distance yourself from people, especially the elderly. Also make plans for what happens if you get coronavirus. Make sure you have paracetamol in your house, enough food and enough pet food etc. Talk to your family members and get your plan in place, and reach out to elderly people to see if they need help with getting items.

Be prepared, you will feel better knowing you have a plan in place.

WASHING YOUR HANDS

The big advice is to wash your hands as this will help to prevent you getting infected or infecting others. I have noticed how many times I touch my face! OMG, I am really working on changing that. I am also aware of touching door handles and surfaces. Keep hand sanitiser with you for when you can’t wash your hands.

Get your kids onboard with hand washing, here is a cool video to show them about why hand washing is so important.

LOOK AFTER YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

Try your best to keep calm and focus on what you can control, you do not need unnecessary stress at a time like this.

I never normally watch the news, but even I have become a bit addicted to watching it now. I realise I need to start limiting my time watching it because there is a balance between keeping informed and getting overwhelmed with it.

Keeping stress levels down, and getting enough sleep is important to keep your immune system healthy. Try to get 7-9 hours sleep every night. Keeping a good routine will help you to stay healthy physically and mentally.

Your diet is very important for your immune system.

Eat a healthy diet, or follow the plan to get all your nutrients. There is evidence that fasting / VLCD can reset your immune system in 3 days or less. So being as healthy as you can is a good focus to have right now.

The worst thing you can do right now is start to comfort eat, you need to look after your health, so focus on plan, or focus on healthy eating.

Just focus on being as healthy as you can in the best way that works for you right now.

USE YOUR EXTRA TIME AT HOME TO BE PRODUCTIVE

I am planning on getting a lot of work done, sticking to plan, and doing home exercises. I also have 2 online courses that I recently purchased that I want to complete! I haven’t had the time to get stuck into them, so I will use my time at home now to do improve my skills.

If I am keeping my mind and actions focused on my health; and I am working on improving the new you experience for our customers this will make me feel like I am accomplishing something worth while everyday and keep my spirits up.

I also want to get out for walks in nature to keep myself and the girls feeling good. The girls are going to do some home projects and I have given them some challenges to complete which they are excited about. I am trying to make this a fun adventure for us, tomorrow we are going to draw up some wall charts for us to tick off daily tasks.

What can you do with the extra time at home? What hobby could you start or get back to? What books do you want to read? What skills do you want to learn? Invest your time into things that will make you feel better.

STAY SAFE EVERYONE

I founded the new you plan 10 years ago, and to say that I love my customers would be an understatement.

You mean everything to me, and I really want to send each and everyone of you so much love right now.
