National Obesity Week 2016 11th – 17th January

This week marks National Obesity Awareness Week and the campaign’s website Jan-U-ary is calling on us all the make a resolution to make changes that can enable each of us to be a bit healthier. As a population, obesity is a major problem that has serious consequences for our health and for the services that support us. According to Jan-U-ary, one in four adults is considered to be obese, along with a quarter of children leaving primary school, which is a shocking and downright scary statistic!

Let’s just take a minute to look at some more statistics, according to the NHS…

The UK & Ireland have the highest levels of obesity in Europe

Today’s obesity levels are more than three times what they were in 1980

The risk of becoming obese is thought to start at an early age and obesity in a parent increase the risk of childhood obesity by 10%

Being overweight or obese increases the risk of many serious illnesses

Compared with a healthy weight man, an obese man is:

Five times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes

Three times more likely to develop cancer of the colon

More than two and a half times more likely to develop high blood pressure – a major risk factor for stroke and heart disease

An obese woman, compared with a healthy weight woman, is:

Almost 13 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes

More than four times more likely to develop high blood pressure

More than three times more likely to have a heart attack

A BMI of 30 to 35 has been found to reduce life expectancy by an average of three years, while a BMI of over 40 reduced longevity by eight to 10 years, which is equivalent to a lifetime of smoking.
