The latest tests reveal that diabetes can be cured by a low calorie diet such as The New You Plan.  Going on a strict meal replacement diet can get diabetics back to normal and bring hope to many millions of people who are suffering from this awful illness. A breakthrough study of British Scientists revealed that losing weight reverses the condition of diabetes, even after as long as 10 years of having the condition.

Findings published today in the Journal of Diabetes Care, show that in a trial, 30 Type 2 Sufferers were put on a strict calorie controlled diet for 8 Weeks.  The strict diet was based on nutritionally complete meal replacements such as diet shakes that provided between 600 and 700 Calories a day.

On average the people taking part in the trial lost 2 stone in 8 weeks (28 pounds or just over 14kg) and over the next 6 months they did not gain any weight back.  All returned to a normal diet afterwards but consumed one third less than before.

The people who took part in the trial had suffered from diabetes from 8 to 23 years.  12 people were still diabetes free 6 months after the strict diet, and the remaining 18 showed positive signs of improvement in their overall health and well being.  They had lost enough weight to remove fat from the pancreas, allowing insulin production to return to normal.

The findings bring hope to Type 2 sufferers, many of whom face a lifetime of pills and injections.

Tests have now shown that the chronic condition is not caused by obesity alone but by the body’s inability to cope with excess fat and people can cure themselves by removing the fat that clogs up their pancreas.

Professor Rob Taylor, a world renowned diabetes researcher at the Newcastle University said, “We have shown it is possible to reverse diabetes, even if you have had the condition for up to 10 years.”

The study answered the question:  “If I lose weight and keep it off will I stay free of diabetes?”  The simple answer is YES.

“If a person gains more weight than they can tolerate, diabetes is triggered.  If they lose it, they go back to normal.”

Melanie Davies, Professor of Diabetes Medicine at the University of Leicester, hailed the “exciting results” of the trial.

Dr David Cavan, of Diabetes.co.uk, said “We live in an environment absurdly full of calories.  Our bodies are not adapted to it.  Type 2 Diabetes is a result of modern lifestyles and it IS REVERSIBLE”

Guidelines say that men should consume an average of 2500 calories a day, and women should consume 2000 calories a day as part of a healthy balanced diet.  People who took part in the study managed on far less – 600 to 700 calories a day consumed by diet meal replacement shakes.  No bread, meat, dairy or root vegetables or alcohol were allowed while on the strict diet.  After the diet maintenance of the weight loss was achieved by consuming one third as many calories as before.
