Meet 69-year-old Pamela, who decided it was time for a change after reaching her heaviest weight. In our exclusive interview with Customer Experience/Journey Manager Cat, Pamela opens up about her inspiring journey towards a healthier, happier self and how this transformation has reshaped her life.
Cat: How did you feel when you found out you were the overall winner?
Pamela: I’m still in shock, really. It took me ages. I thought, why me? When Nicola rang me and told me, I had to get her to repeat it. So, I couldn’t believe it, really. Still can’t.
My husband, David, was saying, why don’t you enter? And I said, oh, well, you know, everybody’s losing far more weight and doing much better than I am. I want to aim for two stone. My friend that that told me about The New You plan, has lost 5 stone. I was thinking, what’s the point of me entering? And then I thought, oh, actually, I might as well. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Getting started…
Cat: What led to you starting The New You Plan?
Pamela: We’d been on holiday for two weeks. We had been eating out, drinking out every lunchtime. When I came home and weighed myself, I was 12st 2lbs, which is the heaviest I’ve ever been in my life. And I thought: “Oh my God!” I’m 5ft 7 and when I checked my BMI I was classed as overweight. And I just thought, no. This is it. I’ve had it. I’m 69. Oh my god. What happens now? I’m just going to get bigger and bigger. And I just thought, no. I’m going to have a go at this.
So, I rang my friend up and we discussed the plan. And, she was saying about how many packs you have and drinking all the water. She told me what the plan was called so I looked it up on the website and I thought, this looks quite good. That’s easy. It’s just 4 packs, no calorie counting.
I’ve never been on a diet before – not a proper diet anyway. When I was younger, I’d think, I’ll watch what I eat for a few days and I’d drop 4lbs like that. But that doesn’t happen when you’re in your sixties, unfortunately. It just won’t budge. So I thought, well, if she can do it – she’s been doing it. She’s tried lots of diets in the past. And she said this was the best one. It works, and she was healthy on it. I thought I’m going to give it a go.
When my 3-Week Bundle arrived, I organised all the packs into days. I thought, I’ll sit with my husband and have my meals when he’s having his. And when he’s having wine, I’ll drink my water. I just stuck to it, and it was much easier than I thought it would be.
Initially, I set myself a target for 3 weeks. I wanted to lose at least half a stone. And, after 3 weeks, I did. I lost half a stone, so I ordered the 8-Week Bundle.
Cat: How were you feeling about starting the plan?
Pamela: I was looking forward to it. I couldn’t wait for it to arrive. And as soon as it came, I started the next day and I just stuck to it throughout. I think that I’ve got the mindset now that if I if I choose to do something, I will see it through. But when you’re losing the weight, it isn’t so much willpower because you’re just looking forward to the next week because you know that it’s working. And if you stick into it and you’re not cheating, there’s no reason it won’t work.
Cat: Did you set yourself a goal?
Pamela: I wanted to lose at least 2 stone. That was the minimum. I’d like to have lost 2.5 – 3st but I thought being realistic, when you get to your sixties, it’s not that easy to lose weight. I knew it might take a little bit longer.
I’d gone to the doctors for a routine blood test. I asked what my cholesterol was now that I’d been doing the plan for a few weeks and it had gone down from 3.6 to 2.6, which she said was really good! I told her I was losing 2-3lbs a week and she said that was normal and really good. That also gave me the confidence to keep going.
Life changing…
Cat: How would you say the plan has changed your life?
Pamela: I got to the stage where I’d wouldn’t want to go and try clothes on in a shop because I didn’t like to see what I looked like when I took my clothes off in the mirror in the changing room. I hated trying to fit into clothes that I thought I’d fit in, and they just looked horrible.
When I reached my 2st goal, the next day, I went to my wardrobe and tried on everything and it all fitted. I couldn’t believe it. I’ve got clothes I’ve bought but never worn. You think, I love that – I’ll slim into that. I’m going to wear that. And it’s hanging in the wardrobe. So I saved myself a fortune in buying new clothes.
I also really enjoy going out and I’m wearing different clothes. In the past, I’d look in my wardrobe and choose something that fitted me. And it just got to the stage where I felt miserable about myself, so I didn’t enjoy going out quite so much because I didn’t feel comfortable in my clothes and didn’t feel comfortable with how I looked. I remember walking past shop windows and just glancing. I’d think, oh my god. I just felt disappointed and quite upset about how I looked.
Now, I love dressing up, I love clothes and going out.
Cat: What were you surprised to learn about The New You Plan?
Pamela: I’m so pleased that I’ve come across The New You Plan because I don’t know if I would have taken the plunge with any other diet because I’ve always thought diets as calorie counting, and that’s just not me. I know that I wouldn’t have stuck with that because that would be too complicated for me. I like the simplicity and I can get a big wide range. You go to your own cupboard and think, what should I have today? It’s quite easy. It feels totally easy.
Cat: What are your favourite meals and snacks?
Pamela: There’s so much choice! I like savoury more than sweet. I’d recommend anyone to try the 3-Week Bundle first because it gives you a different selection. You can find out your favourites.
The Bars are very handy if you’re out at work or you’re out in a car. I liked the Shakes, and I used to really look forward to my shake at night, especially the White Chocolate and Raspberry flavoured one.
I like the Soups as well. And the Spicy Noodle Nosh. On a Saturday night, I would have my one treat a week. I only allowed myself one treat, which was a bag of Crisps. I’d have those with my Spicy Noodle Nosh or, the Daal Curry or something like that.
But I never felt hungry. That was the weird thing. Before the diet, even though you’re eating more, you do suddenly think, oh, I’m peckish!
The other thing I was really surprised at was I thought I’d feel tired because of the lack of calories. Some people mentioned suffering from headaches at the beginning but I didn’t have any of that. In fact, the opposite. My husband said “you’re hyper”, and I seem to have more energy. I’d be getting up at five or six o’clock. I was buzzing.
Reflecting on the plan…
Cat: If you could go back to the beginning, what piece of advice would you offer yourself?
Pamela: Well, I think I would say to myself, everything’s achievable. It is a mindset, and it’s self-worth. I think you’ve got to do what you feel is good for yourself and not feel selfish about it. I’ve got to put myself first sometimes. And it’s never too late. Sometimes you despair and think, oh, no, I’ve left it too late. I’ve got too fat now. I can’t fit in anything and I just feel awful. I wish I’d know about The New You Plan 6 months earlier. I’d tell anybody who doesn’t feel happy with themselves at the weight that they are, to try it. You’ve got absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain (apart from weight).
Cat: What’s next in your New You journey?
Pamela: I’m looking forward to losing the next stone. I know I’ll do it because I’m determined to, and I know that it works. It’s a healthy way of doing it. I feel great. It’s changed me. I feel so much more positive and happy about how I look and more confident now.
Cat: Do you have a final message for anyone thinking of starting the plan?
Pamela: I think when you get older and you’re in your fifties and you go through the menopause, in that period of your life, you’re not feeling great about yourself, and your waist seems to thicken out, and you tend to put weight on no matter what you do.
I would recommend anyone that’s going through that stage of life, especially if you’re lucky enough to still have your parents, often they need caring for. And, then, unfortunately, you tend to lose them around that stage of life as well.
And you tend to lose yourself during that stage a bit. So I would recommend anyone going through any of that to join the The New You Plan because it gives you your own little bit of self control, and it’s just for you. It makes you feel great, and you look great. And there’s there’s so many positives, and it gives you energy.
So, I would recommend anyone at any age, actually, but especially during significant periods like that, when you’re feeling a little bit lost.
