We’re thrilled to share the inspiring journey of Aoife, our recent £3,000 grand prize winner for Best Complete Transformation in our Jan/Feb Transformation Story Challenge. Her story is one that many of us can relate to – years of struggling with weight, trying countless diets, and feeling trapped in a cycle of temporary success followed by disappointment.

Aoife’s transformation goes far beyond the impressive 6st 2lbs she lost. Her journey represents something much more profound: rediscovering confidence, reclaiming joy in everyday activities, and finding the strength she never knew she had.

Join us as we explore Aoife’s remarkable journey – from avoiding family gatherings due to embarrassment to confidently wearing a bikini on holiday and looking forward to upcoming weddings. Her candid insights offer valuable lessons for anyone at any stage of their own weight loss journey.

The Turning Point: Finding Motivation After Years of Struggle

Emma: How much weight have you lost, and what is your overall goal?

Aoife: I’ve lost 6st 2lbs, and I’m actually at my goal. I’ve been at my goal since October and been maintaining since then.

Emma: How were you feeling when you found out that you were a winner?

Aoife: Oh my god, I was just over the moon. I was so shocked because I’m obviously on the Secret Slimmers group, and I’ve seen so many amazing transformations. I didn’t think I really stood a chance. I was absolutely buzzing.

Emma: What did you think about everyone’s reaction to your photos?

Aoife: In my head, it still hasn’t caught up yet with how much weight I’ve lost because I still sort of see myself as big sometimes. When I see other people’s photos, I think, “Oh, they look amazing.” So I was just absolutely buzzing that I was chosen.

Emma: How were you feeling before you started the plan?

Aoife: I’ve struggled with my weight since I was about 14. I’m 28 now, and I’ve always fluctuated up and down and tried diets, but never been able to stick to anything. I’d go on crash diets, lose weight, then put it straight back on.

When I moved to Liverpool 10 years ago, I gained so much weight. I was put on medication for my mental health and just blew up like a balloon. Then lockdown happened, and I gained even more. I fluctuated between 14st 7lbs to 15st 17lbs.

I got to the stage where I was just so miserable and depressed. I couldn’t look at myself in the mirror. When I went back home to Ireland to see my family, I would hide. I was embarrassed for anyone to see me because when I left Ireland at 18, I was at a healthy weight.

I was avoiding seeing my granny and granddad, which I regret now. I couldn’t wear the clothes I wanted to wear. I just felt terrible.

On New Year’s Eve 2023, I decided, “That’s it, I’m doing this.” I was completely motivated. I had actually tried the New You Plan in 2022 after seeing it on TikTok, but only lasted a couple of weeks because I wasn’t in the right mentality.

In December 2023, I thought, “I’m doing it this time. I’ve had enough of being this size.” I made a promise to myself. My New Year’s resolution was to lose the weight. I started on January 5th when I got back to Liverpool from Ireland.

The Journey: Challenges and Triumphs

Emma: How did you find your first week on plan?

Aoife: My first week was so hard. It was really difficult coming from eating so much over Christmas with my family to going on plan. I was really hungry.

I made my partner eat in a separate room because I couldn’t bear having him eat in front of me. I wanted everything to go right and didn’t want to slip up.

But after the first week, when ketosis kicked in, I felt like I had so much more energy. I wasn’t hungry or craving things anymore. I love all the products too, which is a bonus when you actually enjoy what you’re eating. I’ve done diets in the past where you force yourself to eat things that are just horrible.

Emma: What has being on the plan taught you so far?

Aoife: It’s definitely taught me that I’m a lot more strong-willed than I thought I was. When I’m motivated to do something, I can really stick to it and really do it. I’m a lot stronger than I thought I was.

Emma: Which meals and snacks are your favourite?

Aoife: I absolutely love the Cookies and Cream Shake. I love it as a shake, and I also make it into ice cream with an ice cream maker – it’s unreal. I love the Mint Chocolate Bars and the Orange Bars as well. I don’t really have the meals that much. I usually just stick to the Shakes, the Bars, and I love the Crisps. I always have a packet of Crisps every day.

Emma: What motivated you during your journey?

Aoife: Being on the Secret Slimmers group and seeing other people’s transformations inspired me so much. When you see other people losing so much weight, it really, really helps. I’m happy if I can help other people too.

Life After Transformation: A New Confidence

Emma: How has your life changed since losing the weight?

Aoife: Mentally, I feel so much more confident. I just came home from Turkey last night, and we were away for 9 days. I felt so confident in a bikini for the first time in probably 10 years. I can wear clothes now and think, “Yeah, I look good.”

I felt so depressed beforehand, and now I just feel so happy in myself. I’ve been getting so many compliments too, which helps a lot.

Physically, during lockdown, even walking a small distance would make my back hurt so much. I’ve got two small dogs, and I struggled to take them out for walks because I’d be in so much pain. Now I can walk anywhere. I feel so much fitter and healthier.

Emma: What is the nicest compliment you’ve received since losing the weight?

Aoife: I was at a hen party 2 weeks ago for my cousin who’s getting married. I flew back to Ireland, and the last time all my cousins, aunties, uncles, and extended family had seen me, I was big. Everyone gave me so many compliments about how good I looked.

When I got back to Liverpool, my mum messaged me saying, “Oh my god, everyone was talking about you, saying how lovely you looked.” My partner’s mum and dad and so many people have given me lovely compliments.

Emma: Do you have a favorite non-scale victory?

Aoife: I think probably when I graduated in July, I was able to fit into a 8 eight dress. That was probably my favourite non-scale victory.

Emma: What are you most looking forward to now that you’ve reached your goal?

Aoife: We had this holiday to Turkey that I was really looking forward to. Every time I went on holiday before, I was hiding myself, covering up, with no confidence whatsoever to be around the pool. I was looking forward to being able to put on my bikini and get in the pool without feeling embarrassed or ashamed.

I’ve also got two weddings coming up this year, and I’ve never been to a wedding before. I’m really excited for them. A year and a half ago, if I had a family wedding coming up, I would have said, “I’m not going,” because I wouldn’t have wanted everyone to see how big I had gotten. I’d be stressed about an outfit. Now I’ve got my outfit sorted, and I’m just so excited to go.

Looking Back: Lessons Learned

Emma: If you could go back in time to when you first began the plan, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

Aoife: Probably just not to be too hard on yourself if you have a blip. When my dad got sick and everything happened, I was really hard on myself and felt embarrassed because I’d lost all the weight and then thought I’d messed up again.

I spiralled and thought, “Well, there’s no point. I’m going to be big for the rest of my life, so I may as well just continue eating.” My advice would be not to be too hard on myself, to recognise that things happen in life, and even if you do gain weight, you can always lose it again.
