After an incredible journey of self-discovery, determination, and a complete lifestyle overhaul, Nicola has not only lost 7st 7lbs but also rediscovered a zest for life she thought she’d lost. Her story is one of taking a challenging moment, turning it into her biggest motivator, and transforming inside and out.
Named Best Rediscovery Transformation in our Transformation Challenge and winning £1000 cash, Nicola shares her journey – from the moment everything changed to the adventures she’s now planning for the future.
Getting Started – Why I Chose Health Over a Goal Number
Emma: So firstly, how much weight have you lost, and what is your overall goal?
Nicola: To date, I’ve lost 7st 7lbs. I don’t have a figure for my overall goal weight.
I had a bit of an epiphany a couple of years ago. My sister and I, menopausal age, went for a bone density scan. My sister was tracking sort of average per age – she was tracking at seventy-seven, and average was about seventy-five. When I had my test done, she actually redid it because my bone density was really high, which is fantastic for me. But I was tracking about 149 – sort of double. It was off the chart.
So, good news for me – I won’t get osteoporosis, which is great. But it made me think: if me and my sister were just skeletons, mine would probably be twice as heavy. From there, when I started this plan, I didn’t want to set myself a specific goal weight. For me, it’s about being healthy internally and externally.

Like many, I use smart scales – they tell you literally everything. When I started this plan, my visceral fat was nearly 20 (ridiculously high). My subcutaneous fat was also high. Now, my visceral fat is 10.7 – and 10 is good – so the fat around my organs is almost at a healthy level.
Externally, I still have a way to go, but my aim is for my outward health to mirror my internal. I estimate about another 2st 7lbs – 3st will mean I’ve halved my body weight. I feel amazing already – like a different person – but I want it all balanced.
The Turning Point – My “Enough is Enough” Moment
Emma: What originally led you to starting the plan, and how were you feeling when you did begin?
Nicola: As I got older, I was out of breath walking upstairs. I have a little dog who loves walking, but I’d constantly make excuses to stop.
About a year and a half ago, I got edema in my feet while on holiday. They puffed up and retained water. I blamed the heat, but it continued after we came home. I was also getting heart palpitations and felt tired all the time. Even so, I kept putting it off.
Then in May/June, my husband and I went on holiday. On the plane, I couldn’t do the seat belt up. I was mortified – absolutely not asking for an extender. I told my husband to shoehorn me in. I sat there the whole flight unable to move. That embarrassment was my catalyst.

I searched online while still on holiday, found The New You Plan, ordered it ready for when I came back, and was determined. My health had been screaming at me for months, but that seatbelt moment was the real push.
Life on Plan – First Week, Favourite Foods & Big Changes
Emma: How did your first week go on the plan? Any highs or lows?
Nicola: I’d read that some people find days 2 to day 3 tough – but I didn’t get that. I loved the routine straight away. I’m not a big foodie and hate the kitchen, so having a meal ready in minutes was perfect.
My biggest struggle was water intake. Before, I could go all day without a drink. Suddenly, I needed 2.5–4 litres daily. That was my hardest challenge and took about two months to make a habit. But the benefits – more energy, no yawning at work – kept me going.
Emma: Were there any meals or snacks you couldn’t live without?

Nicola: Oh yes! Strawberry Shake, Chocolate Brownies (gooey in the air fryer), Salt & Vinegar Crisps, Spaghetti Bolognese, Vanilla Wafers (“heaven in a wafer”), Strawberry & White Chocolate Bar and Mint Bar (tastes like After Eight mints). I never get tired of them.
The New Me – Health, Confidence & Adventure
Emma: Has your life changed much since losing the weight?
Nicola: Massively. I can put my shoes and socks on without struggle, run upstairs, walk my dog for an hour without stopping, and go on adventures with my husband. We have a big holiday planned – I’m going scuba diving with him, and next year I’ll skydive.
Mentally, I feel incredible. I no longer hide behind people or make self-deprecating jokes. I feel comfortable in my own skin – confident and ready to take on challenges I’d never have considered before.
Emma: Do you have a favourite non-scale victory?
Nicola: Flying to Morocco in May and the seatbelt being loose. I pulled it tight and had so much extra belt – it was the exact opposite of the holiday that started this journey. That was my full-circle moment.
Emma: Has being on plan taught you anything else?
Nicola: Portion control and mindfulness. You don’t need massive meals. Give it 15–20 minutes after eating before deciding if you need more. I’ll always be conscious of this now.
Looking Forward & Advice for Others
Emma: What are you most looking forward to when you reach your goal?
Nicola: More adventures – walking Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons with my husband, scuba diving, skydiving, and just living life fully.
Emma: If you could go back to when you began the plan, what advice would you give yourself?
Nicola: Realise this is your journey – it won’t be like anyone else’s. Don’t obsess over the scales. Be kind to yourself if you blip. Celebrate every win, big or small. Everyone on this plan is a winner.
