Losing weight is a battle, and the biggest battle is how we think; in this blog post We Learn How To Win The Battle of Your Mind our Your Weight Loss Journey.

I love this old story, and it is a story I remind myself of when I am struggling.  Here’s how it goes…

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.  He said, “My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all….”

One is Evil – It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

“The other is Good – It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

two wolves

If you are struggling with your total food replacement diet and weight loss journey, and your mind seems to be your own worst enemy; that is because you are feeding the bad wolf, the wolf that is your enemy.

You are feeding the wolf that says…

  • “You cannot do this!”
  • “It is impossible for you to be slim, it is not in genes, all of your family is fat!”
  • “You can do the plan until Friday, but then you have a work dinner and you will have to break it for that.”
  • “You will always be overweight… why do you even try?”
  • “Drinking 4 litres of water a day, that cannot be good for you!  Stick to 2 litres of fizzy pop.”
  • “This diet plan is not for you, eating nutritionally complete food packs… that can’t be good for you; you need to eat real food – phone a chinese instead.”
  • “Don’t let the children see you drinking a diet shake, best to place an order in the burger restaurant today so they don’t know you are on a diet, you don’t want to set a bad example.”
  • “Eat that chicken nugget, no one is watching and it will do you no harm, it is mostly protein afterall!”
  • “Have extra milk in your tea, how can that impact your weight loss?”
  • “Surely you can drink a can of diet soda, it says diet on the side, how can that slow down weight loss?”
  • “It is a Saturday night, surely you can have the weekends off and do the plan during the week!”
  • “It is a Monday, such a stressful day in work, and so and so said that awful thing that upset you, you deserve a piece of cake, it is OK you can start again tomorrow!”

If you want to win the battle of your mind on your weight loss journey, then you need to feed the good wolf.  The wolf that is your friend and wants the best for you.

You need to feed the wolf that says….

  • “You can do this! I know you can! Day at a time!”
  • “This is a kick start to a New You! Healthy mindset, Healthy Living, what a great way to kick start my new healthy lifestyle!”
  • “You can get slim and healthy and inspire your family to take action too as they see how healthy and happy you become!  Think how amazing that will be!”
  • “You can stay strong and not break the diet for the work dinner this weekend, just pass yourself and engage with everyone and have a laugh! It will be a great night!”
  • “You can learn from the past, you know where you went wrong the last time, this time is different, believe in yourself and in your dreams!”
  • “You can drink 4 litres of water, just start early and sip, sip, sip, you will feel the benefits and look great!  This is the start of a New You!”
  • “It is so good that you don’t have to think about grocery shopping and cooking, the meal packs keep it simple and make fast weight loss easy!”
  • “I am going to set a good example for my family starting now, I am cooking home made healthy foods for them and the whole family is getting healthy together!”
  • “Stay strong, I know you are stressed, but don’t let what so and so said ruin all your hard work, you can do this! Stay strong!”
  • “Make a pineapple fat burner and a new you meal, you will be so glad in 2 months time when you can get dressed up and go out looking and feeling amazing!”

Every day we have 50,000 thoughts.

Depending on what wolf we are feeding… those thoughts will be made up of thoughts that makes us feel bad, or makes us feel good.

Life is SO MUCH BETTER, when we feed the good wolf.

SO today, commit to feeding the good wolf.  The wolf that wants to see you happy, healthy and living the life of your dreams.

Starve the bad wolf.  The wolf that wants to hold you back, and keep you trapped in habits that keep you overweight and unhealthy and unhappy.

Make the bad wolf weak because you are no longer feeding him.

Make your good wolf strong by feeding her every moment of the day.

Build your good wolf up and let her be the wolf that wins the battle of your mind on your weight loss journey.

      1) life! Stuff happens each day and you feel upset, ill, angry , annoyed and quickly reach for comfort. For me that is food. Stuff down those emotions.
      2) but straight away I feel even worse , regret the weakness. Annoyed with myself and beat myself up and think that’s it, I’ve ruined it.ive failed!!
      3) You have to start to be kind to yourself and love yourself! Say to yourself what you’d say to your best friend! Take your own advice!! You’d Say ok, it happened, your human! Your doing so well! Keep at it and keep going! I’m proud of you!! I love you! I want you to suceed! You can do it!!!

I have been so determined and focused to get my goal that I have not blipped once since I started in January and I’ve been very strict on refeed too.

In the past on other diets my heart wasn’t in it and I could use any reason to sneak things. My mindset wasn’t strong and I hasn’t got to the route of the problem or taught ways to deal with stress or cravings. It would make me feel like a utter failure which would lead to more binge eating. It could last days then suddenly I’d be right let’s do this, and I’d get back on track until the next thing caused a bump in the road.

I honestly can’t think New You enough, it’s not just a company who sells a diet plan and leaves you to it. You have given us information, tools and support to help deal with anything life throws at us. My two favourite things are meditation and moving my butt, clears the mind, keeps me calm and keeps me focused xx

      1) Those “sod it” moments when something makes me feel so bad I do something almost out of spite to myself.
      2) Doubles the bad feeling that caused it.
      3) Realisation that it it’s all up to me – no one else can do it for me.

      1) my me talking health is what causes me to fail on my weightloss journey. I suffer with bipolar and severe anxiety and depression and sometimes I end up feeding myself on bad foods (in large amounts) as t eonly way to achieve that feeling of comfort inside..to feel something that isn’t stress or worry or anxiety etc…int can feel like I’m literally feeding my soul at times ..ridding the void x
      2) in the short term I feel comfort..relief…i sleep better…but that is short lived as it’s a slippery slope..its never a one day thing..its becomes habit..and then I end up rapidly gaining weight and physically unhealthy..more worn out..no energy to d anyhing. .tooo conscious to go out..and l which has a dreadful knock on effect on my mental health..and my physical health! I don’t feel like me either .
      3) for me..getting back on track is reminding myself that I am worthy of happiness too..and nd that I don’t have to feed a void…but replace that focus with another. Such as when I feel weak setting myself a challenge..This time it’s 12 weeks tfr…never done that long before..but I am on day 34 100percent…and I feel en powered. .more healthy..have more energy and I feel strong! ..not lifting weights strong..but internally strong! And that is incredible for me 🙂 ..in a world we can’t control..in find gtting back on track is all about remembering what I can! ..i CAN control me..and I know that when I do..i feel like I do now..proud and determined 🙂 …i may not always win at life…but I can control what I do and don’t put in my mouth 🙂

      1. Thinking I have done so well and can have a treat and start again tomara but I eat for about 2 weeks, I can have such a bad mindset sometimes.

      2. I feel disgusted in myself, no energy, bloated and want to do nothing.

      3. I get back on it wen I have my head settled and rember how easi it is to do and how good I feel and how loose my clothes feel .

Stress makes me want to eat rings around myself, it makes me feel like a failure like im proving everyone right, that i cannot keep the weight off, i get my butt into Ss for support and tips for getting back on track xx

      What causes me to fail
A lot of the time it is stress .. There are days at work when I feel really needy and reach for something sweet
It makes me feel like a total failure every time.
I get back on track by a) drawing a line and starting fresh the next day
      B) putting some n y bars in my bag for the next ‘stress’ day.

my willpower is not strong enough, I start the day ok but by teatime I’m giving in to that 1 wee bite of something and then that leads me to thinking ….I’ve broke it now s9o I might as well wait to start again tomorrow
it make’s me feel like c**p, thinking I could be 1 day farther ahead. I know it can be done….I did it before!
I get back on track by saying to myself “this is a new day….go for it!” maybe I’ll do it today and this is day 1 again

      1) What causes you to fail on your weight loss journey?
I cause myself to fail on this journey so many times. I allow boredom to get the better of me or get very stressed that leads to among other things emotional eating. Its not that I’m hungry, it’s that I need something to make me feel better but it never does.

      2) How does it make you feel?
I become very annoyed with myself and beat myself up for the slightest slip from plan. It makes me feel like I have failed and that I’m in some way worthless.

      3) How do you get back on track?
To get back on track, I tend to look at how far I have come and I also have a photo book with pictures in when I was heavier as a reminder. I also keep an old picture of myself on the fridge that’s the first thing I see when I open the fridge door. It makes me pause and think do I really want to do this and face the prospect of going back to how I was. I also have my favourite motto on the fridge in the form of a magnet. Those that indulge, bulge. When I see that it reminds me of what I did to myself in the past and thinking about that, I just never want to go back there.

      1) I really don’t know – something in my head – no idea what it is
      2) feel dreadful and fat and feel that I’ll never be slim
      3) Still struggling to get back on track

    • Author gravatar

I turn to bad food choices when I’m stressed or feeling low.

Makes me feel even worse than i did.

Just know that if I don’t get back on track then I have wasted all the good work i had done.

    • Author gravatar

My friends etc cause me to fail with things like oh just for today, just have one.one can’t hurt you..you can start again tomorrow..and when I do I’m angry and ashamed and feel a failure..just useless

    • Author gravatar

      1) I use food as an emotional crutch, tired, stressed, happy, sad, it’s always there for me!
      2) I feel even worse than before, then start a vicious circle of trying, failing, feeling awful, then trying, failing again. Each time getting fatter & fatter
3)This time I decided that I couldn’t stick to tfr, so I decided to buy a slimming world magazine and loose weight that way. There was an article about a lady who had the same amount of weight to loose as I do, it took her 4 years!!! Something just clicked & I realised I want to get rid of the weight this year, once & for all! There have been some really hideous photos of me taken recently, if I am tempted to blip I remember how awful I look & so far have managed to stay strong. I check on secret slimmers as much as I can through the day, there is usually someone struggling, the support is amazing & keeps me focused

1 life gets in the way at time or emotional eating.
2 then i feel worse for giving in and eating all round me which sets of the emotional eating again.
3 breaking the cycle is hard but trying to be positive and reading through ss give me the motivation to try again. And ths time it has worked and im on week 6 tfr.

    • Author gravatar

      1) Giving in to temptation ie favourite blips perhaps. A smell, an ad or a visual could set you off course. Or just a bad down day.
.2) You may enjoy it at the time but it’s short-lived. Pretty soon reality sets in and you realise the damage you’ve done to your NY plan. You feel over full and uncomfortable. You hate yourself for giving in.
3)Get back on track as soon as possible so that you don’t continue the damage. One blip may not do too much damage and may be sorted by extra exercise but nip it in the bud or it could spiral out of control and do more damage putting the scales up!
      Pep talk yourself.
      1 You’ve come a long way
      2 Dont give in now
3 You can have real food and possibly a treat here or there when you reach your goal or maintenance.
4 Remind yourself how good you feel on NY
5 Remind yourself how slim you look and how good clothes look AND feel on your new slimmer body.
6 Remember that nothing tastes as good as slim feels!!!!! So true!
7 Forgive yourself for the blip and move on with the plan.
8 Love yourself. You’re only human after all.

      ♡♡♡
