The New You Guide to Ketosis:

Ellie and I write to you today to explain some of the common questions about Ketosis and ketogenic diets. First and foremost then is explaining what this is. Ketosis is a state in which the body switches from being a carbohydrate-burning organism fueled by sugars and carbohydrates in conventional foods into a fat-burning machine. If there is not enough glucose from carbohydrates in the bloodstream the body draws on fat stores for fuel hence the fat-burning machine, causing the appearance of ketones in the blood.

Ketones are formed when glycogen stores in the liver have run out. When the body is in ketosis we tend to feel less hungry, and there is the general feeling of greater well being as energy levels feel elevated and our mood lifts.

This leads to the next most obvious question of how will I know when I am in Ketosis. You can purchase test strips which provide an indication based on the ketones expelled in urine. However there are a few simple indicators that will tell you this without having to do a definitive test such as this. Many people notice a metallic or sweet taste in their mouths, possibly stronger smelling urine, stronger body odor, for myself one clear indicator is always the bad breath! Last but by no means least, as this is one of the most beneficial side effects, is that you have a distinctly reduced appetite.

Right, so at this point you are on the starting blocks so the next question is how long does the process take. Well you won’t be in ketosis until you deplete your body’s glycogen. This means that it is not an exact science and will depend on many factors such as activity, you’re burning off the remaining stores. Some of the glycogen is kept in your liver, but for the most part it is found in your muscles. If you’re not doing too much physically, it can take up to about a week.

The final question therefore is how easy is it to knock yourself out of Ketosis.

Again the threshold for everyone is different and ultimately this is why we suggest sticking stringently to our products as in some instances something as simple as an effervescent supplement may impact the body’s ketogenic state. Important for your own motivation is to note here that coming out of ketosis is not going to mean that your diet is ruined… your weight loss may slow down but you will still lose weight if you are on a calorie restricted diet.

So the age old argument that many of us have between our good and bad side of… I have done the damage now so I may as well carry on and start again tomorrow does not hold any value here. You are always in a position to make things better and moving in the right direction is always an option even if a mistake has been made J
