New you plan results

Last Christmas, Rebekka didn’t have a single coat that would fasten around her. She skipped the festive events she usually loved, hid in oversized hoodies, and dreaded seeing people at her daughter’s prom.

This Christmas will look very different.

After gaining around 5st in less than a year, Rebekka had tried to start again more times than she could count. Then, in January, she saved a screenshot that said “This time you’re not quitting”, and she meant it.

Her New You Plan results speak for themselves: she has lost 4½ stone, rediscovered her energy, got back into fitness and, in her words, stopped turning to food to cope. She has even reclaimed the clothes her teenage daughter “borrowed” while she was bigger.

And when we called to tell her she had won our Transformation Story Challenge, the first question from her daughter was: “Are we booking a holiday?”

In this interview with Joanne from our Customer Services team, Rebekka shares what finally made it click, why this meal replacement plan never feels like a diet, and the moment she knew it was working.

Hiding Away in Oversized Clothes

Joanne: Congratulations, Rebekka! You’ve lost 4½ stone since January, but you’ve said the biggest change isn’t on the scales. What has it been for you?

Rebekka: Having more energy, being able to get back into fitness again and having more motivation. I’m a pug mum, I’ve got two teenagers, I’m a hairdresser and I help care for my nan, so life is busy. Having that energy back makes a huge difference.

Joanne: You’d done a similar plan before. What happened?

Rebekka: I did this sort of diet about 10 years ago and kept the weight off very successfully for eight years. Then I was put on medication that can cause weight gain, and I gained about five stone in less than a year.

Joanne: How did that affect you?

Rebekka: It had a massive impact on how I felt about myself. At Christmas we normally go to lots of festive events, and I just didn’t want to take part. I didn’t have any coats that went around me. I felt so self-conscious. Even at my daughter’s prom, I was seeing people I hadn’t seen for a while. It’s horrible when you’re hiding in really oversized clothes because you hate the way you look.

“This Time You’re Not Quitting”

Joanne: What made you start again in January?

Rebekka: I’d tried so many times to start the plan, and I just couldn’t do it. It was too hard. Then all of a sudden in January, I thought, that’s it, we’re doing it. You’d posted something on one of your pages with the quote “This time you’re not quitting.” I took a screenshot of it, and every time I had a wobble, I looked at it and thought, we’re not quitting this time. We’re going to do it till the end. That really kept me going.

I also saw my sister in January. I was in this huge hoodie, hiding myself, and I thought, I won’t see her again until June, and I’m going to get this weight off. I just wanted to feel better about myself. I didn’t want to be hiding away anymore.

Joanne: You’d followed a similar plan years ago. What was different this time?

Rebekka: I’d never had snacks before, so I wondered if it would still work with a snack. Now I have one every day at four o’clock. It’s my crisp break, and I look forward to it. It just breaks the day up.

No Food Noise: Rebekka’s New You Plan Results

Joanne: What has the plan been like day to day?

Rebekka: It’s not tedious at all. When I went on holiday, I missed the products so much. I missed my routine. On a Sunday, I plan my packs for the whole week and put each day in a little freezer bag. Each morning, you grab your bag and it’s just there. There’s no brain work, no effort. That’s what you’re having for the day, and it’s so straightforward.

Joanne: What would you say to someone who thinks they couldn’t do it?

Rebekka: My nan and my mum say, “I couldn’t do it,” and I tell them you could, because it’s so much easier than you think. For me, I don’t get any food noise or cravings. The longest I went without a single blip was 11 weeks, and I couldn’t believe it. Once you get that momentum, it’s so easy. This doesn’t feel like a diet, because the products are nice and I look forward to them. Anyone who says “I couldn’t do it”, you absolutely could.

Joanne: What are your favourite products?

Rebekka: I loved the Salted Caramel and Clementine shake, so I’m hoping it comes back! The Brownies are delicious, and the Total Shakes are so yummy, especially the Cinnamon, the Carrot Cake, and the White Chocolate and Coconut. I was surprised how much I loved the Oatmeal Porridge. And the Crispy Bars, every bedtime with a decaf tea. It’s a proper treat.

Confidence, Community and a Holiday to Book

Joanne: When did you know it was really working?

Rebekka: When the clothes started fitting. They’re not digging in, your bra’s getting looser, everything’s getting looser, and you think, yes, I’m doing this. It spurs you on. Now I’m all about the shopping again. I’m wearing fitted clothes, not big baggy things to cover me up. I’ve got loads more confidence.

When I gained the weight, my daughter took quite a lot of my wardrobe. Now she’s saying, “Hang on, this wasn’t yours originally,” and I’m like, “Yes, and I’ve stolen it back!”

Joanne: How has the Secret Slimmers community helped you?

Rebekka: It’s an amazing group. Everybody is so supportive. You know where to go if you’ve had a bad day. It’s like a big hug around you, and you feel safe. Mims really inspired me when I was struggling to knuckle down, especially seeing her still wearing the trousers from her before picture. Tessa is always lovely and leaves kind comments, and I love Nikki’s recipes. They look so naughty, but they’re all made with the products.

Joanne: You’re so close to your goal now. What’s next?

Rebekka: I set my goal at 11st 5lb, then lowered it to 11st, and I’m only a pound away. But I’m thinking of going to 10st 12lb, because that would be five stone lost. That takes me back to where I was before I started.

Joanne: And finally, how did it feel when we called to say you’d won?

Rebekka: I was so surprised! My daughter took my photos for the entry and kept saying, “Mum, if we win, can we book a holiday?” I told her lots of people had entered, and so many of them had lost more than me. When you rang, I put you on speaker, and the first thing she said was, “Are we booking a holiday?”
