Love Commandment 10: Commit and Finish What You Start

“When you have a great and difficult task, something perhaps almost impossible, if you only work a little at a time, every day a little, suddenly the work will finish itself.”

 Isak Dinesen

Welcome to the last article in my current series, and I hope you have enjoyed reading them as much as I have writing them 🙂

I have a lot of experience in terms of today’s topic, because I still struggle with finishing what I started out to achieve in terms of my ultimate goal weight.

So today I am not only going to cover how to Commit and Finish What You Start, but I am going to join you in following my own advice and finish my journey for once and for all!  Come on – we can do it!

I have been at my healthy BMI for a while now – which is wonderful considering that I started out at nearly 17 stone and in the category of Morbidly Obese – but I haven’t reached the ultimate weight that I long to be, so that I can frolic and prance around the beach in a teeny weeny polka dot bikini 😉

I know a great many of us stay on plan 100% until we have nearly reached our ultimate goal, then fall off the wagon because we already feel amazing and the pain of being overweight has lessened, causing us to be less motivated to continue and giving us a great excuse to stop the plan.

However, I have three tips today on how to Commit and Finish What You Start, so that we can reach our ultimate goals together!

Visual Progress Chart

Sometimes there is nothing more motivating than seeing a visual representation of your journey.  Seeing just how far you have come, and how far you have to go can really spur you on to complete what you have set out to achieve, especially if you are so close!

My advice is to input your starting weight, losses and ultimate goal into a tracker like this one.

Here is mine:

Melissa's Weight Loss Ticker

For me, seeing that I have come so far and have such a tiny way to go makes me itch to get to my finishing line!

The Ultimate Reward

Another way to stay on track until goal is to promise yourself a large reward for getting there – and not enjoying this prize unless you do!

This could be anything from a shopping spree for new, smaller clothes, to something really big like a summer holiday.

You can also rope in a partner or close friend to ensure that you don’t get this treat until you have earned it.  How’s that for making you stay on track? 😉

“A Dream with a Deadline is a Goal”

This is one of the most powerful ways to go about achieving your dreams – set an absolute deadline by which you want to reach them!

I used this to lose my 6+ stone so far, and will use this again to get that last bit off myself.

So let’s get S.M.A.R.T about it then, shall we?

Specific – how much do you want to lose EXACTLY?

Measurable – will you measure this in clothing sizes or in lbs?

Achievable – can you actually lose this amount safely within your deadline?

Realistic – have you calculated how much you can lose based on your personal week’s loss average?

Time-related – what date are you aiming to lose this weight by?

I would love to hear from you whether you have any extra tips to help us all Commit and Finish What We Start.

I would also love to know whether you enjoyed my Love your Body Commandments series, and if it has made any impact on you this February.
