1 Powerful Breakthrough: How Melanie Finally Escaped Years of Failure

Melanie is one of our incredible Total Plan Transformation Challenge runners-up, and her story is one of strength, resilience, and choosing herself when life felt at its hardest.
After years of struggling with her weight, physical pain, and the devastating loss of her husband, Melanie reached a point where something had to change.
Now, just months later, she has lost an incredible 5 stone, transformed her health, and rebuilt her life with a completely new mindset.
But more than anything, Melanie’s journey is about one powerful decision:
“I need to do something for me.”
This is Melanie’s Story…
Getting Started
Rachael: How did you first come across The New You Plan, and what made you decide to start?
Melanie: I remember the exact moment. I was sitting on Morecambe Promenade in the sunshine, doing my order. It was such a lovely late summer day, and when I clicked that button, I felt such relief. I just thought, “Right, I need to start now.”
I’d known about the plan for a few years, so it wasn’t new to me. I’d been thinking about it for a long time, but that moment just felt right.
Life Before the Plan
Rachael: What was life like before you started?
Melanie: I’ve always been a larger person. I’ve never been really slim, but I used to be comfortable around a size 12 to 14. Over time, my weight crept up, and by last year I was nearly 18 stone.
My job is very physical. I’m a support worker, and it involves wheelchair pushing, personal care, and looking after people with high dependency needs. I absolutely love my job, but my body was starting to fail me.
My hips and knees were really bad, and I had no energy. I was going to the doctors, having physio, but nothing was really helping because my weight was still high.

When Everything Changed
Rachael: You mentioned your husband earlier. Can you share a bit about that time?
Melanie: Yes. We’d just come back from an amazing holiday in America, and within 24 hours of landing, he was in hospital.
Within a week, they found a mass… and it was incurable.
That completely turned our lives upside down.
We didn’t even know how long we had. The hardest part was telling our children. My eldest understood, but my youngest… we had to take time and get help to explain it properly.
After that, everything changed.
He didn’t eat… and I did.
I didn’t want to cook. I couldn’t cope mentally. We went from having proper home-cooked meals to takeaways and convenience food all the time.
That became my way of coping.
Grief, Survival and Losing Herself
Rachael: That must have been incredibly difficult.
Melanie: It really was.
After my husband passed, everything hit us in different ways. My youngest especially has had waves of emotion — some months are good, some months are really hard.
And for me… I just wasn’t looking after myself at all.
I was doing what I’ve always done — putting everyone else first.
The Moment It Hit
Rachael: Was there a moment where things really clicked for you?
Melanie: Yes. There was a photo from a wedding at the end of August.
I looked at it and thought… I look massive.
It wasn’t about confidence — I am a confident person — but I could see where I was heading.
My mum was a big woman, and she struggled with her health. She’s not here anymore, and a lot of that was down to her health.
I looked at that photo and thought, I don’t want that to be me.
That was my turning point.

5 Stone Down… and Still Going
Rachael: Since starting in September, how much have you lost?
Melanie: Five stone.
Rachael: That’s incredible.
Melanie: I’ve literally shrunk.
Clothes I bought just a few months ago are now too big. Trousers that were tight, I now have to hold up.
Even my daughter said, “Are you actually going to wear those jeans?” But I keep them as a reminder of how far I’ve come.
Physical Changes That Changed Everything
Rachael: What’s been the biggest physical difference?
Melanie: My hips and knees.
I don’t have pain anymore. It’s gone.
And my energy levels — completely different. I can go out, go walking, be active… and I actually want to.
Before, I wouldn’t even think about going for a walk.
Now I do it without even thinking.

The Mental Shift
Rachael: What’s changed mentally for you?
Melanie: I’ve realised how strong I am.
After everything I’ve been through, I didn’t realise how determined I could be.
And I’ve learned that I’m allowed to do something for me.
That’s been the biggest shift.
“I Had to Choose Me”
Rachael: That’s such a powerful message.
Melanie: It really is.
People always say, “You’re so good at looking after everyone else.” And I am. But what about me?
This journey… this is for me.
It’s about my health, my life, and being here longer for the people who need me.
Because they do need me.
My dad has dementia, my children rely on me… and I realised I have to look after myself too.
Making It Work in Real Life
Rachael: How have you made the plan work around your lifestyle?
Melanie: Preparation is everything.
I’ve got a rucksack with my shakes and water, a lunchbox with my packs, and I always make sure I have everything with me.
At home, I’ve got a cupboard full of products, so I never run out.
That’s the key — no excuses.
Favourite Products

Rachael: What do you think was your biggest mindset shift?
Rachael: Do you have any favourites?
Melanie: Spaghetti Bolognese is my favourite meal.
And crisps — I couldn’t do this without crisps. I’m more savoury than sweet, so they’re my go-to.
Soups are great for work as well.
Habits That Changed Everything
Rachael: What habits have changed the most?
Melanie: Drinking water.
I never used to drink it, but now I drink it all day. It’s made such a difference.
And alcohol — I don’t really drink anymore. I don’t miss it. It was just a comfort habit, and I’ve replaced that now.
The Power of the Community
Rachael: You’ve become a big part of the community. Has that helped?
Melanie: Massively.
Seeing other people’s journeys, supporting each other, and being inspired — it keeps you going.
And I love when people message me asking about the plan. If I can help someone else start, that’s amazing.
Advice for Anyone Starting
Rachael: What would your advice be for someone starting?
Melanie: Start your water prep before your order even arrives.
Get used to drinking water.
Clear out the foods that will tempt you.
And trust the process.
It works — you just have to stick with it.

Looking Ahead
Rachael: What’s next for you?
Melanie: I want to lose about another stone and then maintain.
But I’m not coming off the plan.
This is part of my life now.
One Sentence to Sum It Up
Rachael: If you had to sum up your journey in one sentence?
Melanie:
“This plan works for me… and I’m not going anywhere.”
Final Thoughts
Melanie’s story is about so much more than weight loss.
It’s about:
✨ strength through grief
✨ choosing yourself after years of putting others first
✨ rebuilding your life step by step
✨ and proving that lasting change is possible
From nearly 18 stone… to 5 stone down.
And this time?
She’s not stopping.
