If you are starting out on your VLCD diet journey, the first few days can be quite a challenge until you get into ketosis.  When achieve a state of ketosis you will feel much better, here are some tips to help you get through the initial stages.

Starting a VLCD diet plan using nutritionally complete meal replacements is a fast and easy way to lose weight fast and ensuring your body gets the right balance of nutrients, vitamins and minerals to ensure you stay healthy.

The first few days your body has to get adjust to your new routine, this includes surviving on less calories and withdrawals from any processed foods, sugary foods and high fat foods.  The first few days is really like a big detox, as your body goes without all the junk food that it is used to getting every day.

As well as the physical withdrawal symptoms you might also find that you go through an emotional detox too, as so many people do have such an emotional attachment to food, it can be difficult for some people to get through the day without turning to food for comfort.

It does take determination and focus to get through this initial stage and after a few days to gets much easier as your body will go into a natural fat burning state called ketosis.

Ketosis occurs when your body uses up all its glycogen, and switches it’s fuel source to your body fat.  When your energy supply is tapped into burning your body fat, this results in rapid weight loss, without hunger, and an increase in energy.

The state of ketosis is THE GOAL when you are following a VLCD Total Food Replacement diet plan.  It normally takes 3-5 days to achieve ketosis.

In our Secret Slimmers group one of our clients posted that she was struggling just to do one day successfully and she asked for some help.  Here are some of the posts and tips that she received….

  1. There isn’t really an easy way to get into ketosis day 1 will probs be an easier day than day 2,3,4 BUT its only 4 days of suffering ?? which would you prefer 4 days of feeling awfull and hungry or another 6 months still having the 6 stone you’re trying to lose and still be *trying* so stop trying and start *doing* and suffer for 4 days and stick with it 100% no excuses and you will be happy ya got thru the worst part 😉;)
  2. If you know that your toughest times of the day are in the evening (this is when most people struggle) then make sure you plan your evening, don’t leave yourself in limbo.  For example:  5pm:  Go for an evening walk.  6pm:  Have you Hot TFR Meal.  6:30pm:  Declutter a drawer in your bedroom.  7pm:  Have a bath and pamper yourself.  8pm:  Have a New You Chocolate TFR Shake made with hot water.  8:30pm:  Go to bed with a good movie / kindle / sky plus.  You need to plan ahead, take control and stay focused and busy.  Do things that will make you feel good without food.
  3. Treat yourself to something nice just for completing DAY 1.  If one day is a challenge for you, then make sure you reward yourself for completing one day.  That is a great achievement!! You don’t have to set your first reward for losing your first stone, or completing your first week.  Set targets and rewards that are achievable for you and that motivate you.  Take this journey day by day, and set mini targets that will keep you motivated.  If you complete 1 day you could treat yourself to something from amazon that night, or buy some new make up or something small just to mark your achievement.
  4. Don’t beat yourself up if at first you do not succeed!  Don’t be so hard on yourself!! You CAN do this.. it might take a few tries but will be soooooooo worth it in the end… I have lost 2 stone and have about 6 more to go but take it day by day and pound by pound and it really does get easier <3<3 x x
  5. Watch the 7 Day Kick Start Videos and complete the worksheets, they will REALLY help you to get and stay focused on why you want/need to lose weight and break free from this feeling of frustration and overwhelm.
  6. Anytime u feel like breaking out have a pint of fizzy water and go for a walk ,,,, works for me every time
  7. Carry something that weighs a couple of pound in your bag and notice how heavy it is, put a delay in place, write down 5 reasons when this is important to you and read the list every time you are tempted, decide not to have anything for 5 minutes at a time and try to see how long you can delay. Wish you best of luck x
  8. Try starting later. I have my 1st product between 11-12, 2nd between 3-4pm and then my 3rd between 7-8pm. I’ve always been an evening time snacker so this works for me. If you need a 4th product to stop you from eating, then have it. I have to say that we are not all super diciplined people here. If we were, we wouldn’t have to lose any weight. You have to decide you want this weight gone badly enough to put up with 3-4 days of hunger. If you just commit to getting through those days, you will be over the hardest part. Then all you need to do is stick to the plan and watch the weight come off. Put the doubt out of your head. You can do this. I failed on my first day, but tried again the next day and 7wks later, I feel great. Forget about today. Be determined that you will try and SUCCEED tomorrow. We’ll all support you.
  9.  I have my first product @ 12:15 due to large amounts of coffee 😉;) and I also give myself a day end point which for me is 9pm, once I get there, I’ve done a day and finish off with a hot choc, it’s really about fooling your mind and just saying NO. Good luck chick, oh and no one said it was easy, I’ve been losing 4 stone for 10 years, but one year is going to be MY year and I’m ready, I’m guessing you are too xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
  10. The first few days are hard, but the scales move very quickly& you’ll be so motivated by that. It’s a good idea to have an outfit you want to fit into, I have jeans that I want to be in by Christmas, & I owe it to myself to go for it. Being overweight isn’t easy & I just got sick of not fitting in my clothes properly, I decided no way was I going to be starting weight at Christmas, & I’ve lost over a stone, hope to lose 2 by Christmas. U so deserve this, give yourself the chance, I wasn’t the best at discipline but couldn’t go on as I was x
  11. My first goal I set was six stone ….and I’ve battled so long to get rid of this burden too me…I tried everything on this planet and this is the one that worked for me… yes I had a few uncomfortable days…. but my need for my health and that feel good factor was far more important too me than eating something that wasn’t on the plan…so I battled on and I’m glad that I did……take a few moments and visualize wot it would be like to get into that nice outfit..or maybe just have the extra energy to complete daily chores… on that note make a pledge for urself that u will do this u can do this….drink lots of water, it does help… bless you.. and goodluck xx 3<3
  12. I would suggest popping on here whenever u think u might crack and have a read through the posts, I found offering advise to someone else helped me take the advise myself. Post on the page if ur feeling vunerable and give us a chance to talk you out of it. 3rd time lucky 😀:D

Day 2 of my second attempt at weight loss through VLCD. In the past 18 months I experienced great success and lost 8.5 stones BUT……… failed miserably at maintenance and have regained 6.5 stones of the weight that I worked so hard to lose. This time will be different and the change WILL be permanent!! I need to have surgery to remove gall bladder but consultant says risk will be significantly less if I lose at least 2 stones before op, so my health is now top priority and motivation! Have to see him again in 12 weeks, so wish me luck ;o)

When I reached my target in May 2012 I celebrated by buying myself a sports car but was gutted when I had to sell it a few months later when I could no longer fit behind the wheel :o( It is now my mission to own a classic MG by the end of 2013………..and to keep it to enjoy every summer ;o) Can’t wait to be in ketosis again, I’m now feeling really excited about how much better my life is going to be in just a few short months.

Hi David, congrats on getting back on the saddle. Life is a journey, and nothing is a failure if we learn from it, it sounds like you have learned from your past experience. Mindset is such an important part of maintenance.

I wish you great success, and hope to see photos of you in your sports car very soon!

Good luck with getting healthy, slim and full of energy 🙂

        Julz xx
