Best Legacy Transformation: How Jules Lost 6st, Won £1000 & Gained a New Lease on Life

Jules’ story is one of unwavering strength, incredible humour, and life-changing perspective. At 64, she’s lost an amazing 6st, reversed habits that no longer served her, and embraced a new lifestyle that not only changed her own life – but inspired her adopted son and daughter to transform theirs too.

From caring for her late mother to facing a recent cancer diagnosis, Jules shares how The New You Plan became a lifeline, teaching her not just how to lose weight, but how to truly live again. Her interview is packed with wisdom, wit, and powerful life lessons – plus a few brilliant one-liners you won’t forget.

“It’s Either Your Face or Your Backside!”

Emma: How much weight have you lost, and what is your goal?

Jules: So I’ve lost 6st. I started off around 18st, and I’m down to 12st. I’m about a size 16 now, and I don’t want to go any further. As you get older, your skin doesn’t go back – and I’ve seen so many people whose faces have just collapsed. An actress once told me, “It’s either your face or your backside,” and I’d rather have my face! So size 16 is absolutely fine with me – especially when I used to be a size 14. That’s a huge change.

“We Did It Together – That’s What Started It”

Emma: What led you to starting the plan, and how were you feeling when you first started?

Jules: I was a full-time carer for my mother for 5 years before she passed in late 2023. When you’re a carer, you just keep going – you don’t take time for yourself. Around April or May the next year, my adopted son, who’s part of the family, found out he had diabetes and needed to lose weight. He was dreading it, because we’re all foodies. So I said, “I’ll do it with you.”

He was waiting ages for a diet from the NHS – he didn’t get it until December. So I started The New You Plan on my own first. When he saw how well I was doing, he joined too – and lost 3st in 8 weeks! I was furious! Men lose it so much quicker, don’t they? But we cheered each other on. Interestingly, the NHS diet spiked his sugars, but New You helped him balance them again.

We’d done Slimming World together 10 years ago and lost 6st back then too – but it piled back on through holidays and life. This time, the change has been deeper. I still use the plan a couple of days a week now to maintain my weight.

“I Used to Be the Jägerbomb Queen!”

Emma: How did you feel when you found out you’d won Best Legacy Transformation and £1000 Cash?

Jules: I couldn’t believe it. I nearly didn’t enter again – I thought I was being greedy! But I wanted people to know that the end of your weight loss journey isn’t the end. Maintenance is its own journey.

I’ve completely changed how I eat and drink now. I used to be the Jägerbomb Queen! But I don’t drink much anymore – my tolerance has gone. I’m usually the designated driver these days. We’ve saved money, and I feel better for it.

Even takeaways don’t appeal anymore. I’ll scroll through Just Eat for an hour, then just close the app and make something from the fridge. Food tastes different now – more greasy, more sugary. I genuinely crave lighter food and feel better eating it.

“Losing Weight Helped Me Catch Cancer Early”

Emma: How has your life changed since losing the weight?

Jules: I have rheumatoid arthritis, a metal hip and knee, and mobility challenges. I waited 5 years for those surgeries, and my BMI delayed them at first. But now, I’ve lost the weight – and recently, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Thankfully, they caught it very early with a mammogram.

Here’s the thing – because I’d already lost the weight, they didn’t delay surgery. No “lose a few stone first” chat. They could act straight away. Losing weight quite literally saved my life.

People often talk about weight loss improving health – but they don’t realise it could mean the difference between early detection and delayed treatment. That’s huge.

“The Habits I Grew Up With Are Breaking With Me”

Emma: What has the plan taught you?

Jules: It’s broken generational habits. My mum grew up during the war – cold, hungry, and rationed. When she raised us, food was a reward, an expression of love. She used to say, “You’re so pretty. You should lose weight,” and then hand me a pie because she knew I liked it.

That mindset carried on with me. I passed it to my children. But now, the cycle is changing. My daughter joined The New You Plan and has lost 5st since January. She’s joined two gyms, does bungee fit, swims, runs – she’s doing a 10K for breast cancer now. Her whole life has changed. She’ll be entering the next challenge, and I can’t wait to see her shine.

“I’ve Earned My Bingo Wings – And I’m Proud of Them”

Emma: What meals and snacks can’t you live without?

Jules: The Asparagus Soup is a favourite – it feels like a meal, especially with croutons. I also love the Lemon Bars, the Vanilla Custard Porridge, and the Banoffee Porridge. I still have porridge most days now, even in maintenance. I’m not a huge Shake fan, but they help before bed if I’m hungry.

Emma: What are you most looking forward to now that you’ve reached your goal?

Jules: Honestly? I think I’m already there. Size 16 suits me, and I can find clothes I love now. Though sizing is wild – some size 16s are huge, others are tiny! But I’ve cleared out all my bigger clothes. If I put weight back on, I’d have nothing to wear – and I like it that way. It keeps me accountable.

Emma: Any standout compliments or moments?

Jules: Oh, loads! I’m quite social, and people often say, “Oh my God, you look amazing!” I get compliments on my hair, my weight – it’s become second nature to just say “thank you.” I know I look better. But more than that, I feel better.

Emma: What’s your favourite non-scale victory?

Jules: Trying on target weight clothes and realising they fit. That moment when a smaller size zips up – it’s the best motivation in the world. You don’t always see your progress in the mirror, but your jeans don’t lie.

“Your Excuse Might Be Loose Skin – But Mine Nearly Saved My Life”

Emma: If you could go back to Day 1, what would you tell yourself?

Jules: Don’t be afraid to take breaks. I went away, put on 4lbs, then lost it again in a week. It’s not about perfection – it’s about consistency. I gave myself space to enjoy life and stay focused.

People worry about loose skin. But I say: I’ve earned my bingo wings, and I’m proud of them. I even posted a photo of them with angel wings added on! What’s a bit of loose skin when you’ve come so far?

Some people use that fear as an excuse not to try. But if I hadn’t lost the weight, I might not be able to get surgery for the cancer they found. Weight loss didn’t just change my life – it might have saved it.
