I have found that most people don’t really care one way or the other, we are most conscious of it ourselves and so if we don’t make an issue of it, it often isn’t an issue! When I have arrived at either a friends house, a restaurant or a bar, the first thing I do is order a large bottle of water or get myself a jug… then delay by saying ‘in a minute’ or ‘let me see how I am once I settle’. In a restaurant, I have then said “actually, I’m OK but if I change my mind, I’ll let you know”. To my friends, I have said that I was out for lunch and don’t feel like eating. (It is not always appropriate to tell people what plan you are on). In a friends house, I have told them that I’m sticking to a regieme and it is just easier for me to stick to it! I have been at a lot of social occasions while on the plan and it has yet to be an issue. My inner voice keeps saying “Those who matter don’t mind, and those who mind, don’t matter.”

I am open and honest that im on the diet to begin with so social situations are easier, I take a snack and bar with with me every where just incase it gets to hard watching others eat, I also have put the choccy ball treats in a paper bag, like a sweet bag and if out and people grab an ice cream ect… I get the bag out, problem is then everyone wants one of my choccy balls grrrr lol, I must admit its not to bad when everyone knows as they don’t put pressure on me to eat

Top tips: PREPARE! Mentally as well as physically. I did this last Friday when out for a boozy evening pub party.

The mental prep was a pep talk, with a really serious question of: Am I strong enough to do this? If the answer had been “no”, I would have cancelled. That’s obviously not the point of the Top Tips, but the Stern Talking To definitely helped. I thought through what would happen and how I would feel when I saw and smelled fatty food and alcohol. I rehearsed what drinks I was going to order (soda water), what I was going to say to people who questioned me (a fib about meds – turns out it wasn’t needed) and how I was going to make sure I didn’t blip. I also planned – this sounds sad but worked for me – a list of conversations. I am very used to getting drunk at parties, so I needed to make sure I had a good time when I was the sober one – this was quite hard for me!

The physical prep was about acknowledging that this might be hard, and being kind to myself, while staying on plan. I prepared some portable food – a vanilla shake to add to one round of soda water, a microwaved crisp, and a wafer pack to have as necessary. I also made sure I kept up my water-intake through the day (even though I had to keep going to the loo!) and had a pack of water flavouring with me.

Final part of the planning was ‘take a big bag’ 🙂
