VLCD & Stress - the tips to success
VLCD & Stress – the tips to success

One of the reasons most commonly used to justify breaking a diet and ruining all your hard work is stress. A bad day seems to justify creating a worse future. I for one don’t believe this and today I am going to share a couple of the reasons why as well as a video that has literally changed the way I look at my life.

The Theory:

So stress is bad and it therefore can justify you breaking the diet… What if this were wrong and I told you that stress is a really important part of your success?  I recall my third year psychology lecture on stress and so much of what was said in one single lecture stuck with me through life.  Short sharp burst of stress can provide the body and mind with things that you need to develop and grow.  There is the most obvious side effect which is we seek solutions to problems we believe cause stress – the result is innovation and an improvement in the quality of life.

Then there is the more personal side of stress that many of us tend to under rate as understanding it can have huge personal benefits. Your heart pounds, your palms sweat, your mouth goes dry- Is this the start of everything going wrong? NO – savor it, rise to the challenge not the fridge door! Your brain has just told your body it has encountered an ‘out of the ordinary’ situation and therefore it needs to kick things up a gear! It has this gift handed down to us by evolution, initially intended to keep you alive, now it is best used to keep you ahead of the drag curve.

The Facts:

The sudden onset of a stressful situation will cause the body to initially release adrenalin – that one hormone we all know about that really gets the hear pounding.  Norepinephrine which is essentially the same as adrenaline. Last but not least there is Cortisol which essentially in the simplest of terms is a hormone that  defaults your body to survival mode which can have many added benefits in terms of weight loss, blood pressure management, as well as reduced inflammation and a stronger immune system.

The video that changed the way I think about stress:

I would love to hear from you if knowing that stress is important in your life has made you less stressed about being stressed!!!
