Is diet or exercise better?

Today, our Customer Transformation Coach, Candida addresses the question that’s on everyone’s lips… Is exercise or diet better?

Diet or exercise?It is a truth universally acknowledged that diet and exercise go hand in hand… or do they? Exercise is essential for leading a healthy life, however, it doesn’t always promote weight loss. Exercise increases appetite in many people and although initially you will burn more calories, the burn will eventually plateau as the body stabilises.

When it comes to losing weight, what you put in your body is more important than how you move it. When I started my New You journey, I was too embarrassed to join a gym or to even go out speed walking and if truth be known, I did not have the inclination. I was embarking on a massive detox and I felt that this was more than enough for my body to cope with at that time. Don’t get me wrong, I did not sit around all day waiting for the weight to miraculously drop off and for a toned and perfect Claudia Schiffer body to emerge, I knew that at some point onDiet or exercise? my journey I would have to start exercising to tone up. I have a very busy life and at the time, a relatively physical job, so really that was enough to deal with without adding an exercise regime in as well. Everybody of course is different but for me, losing the weight was my priority.

Please don’t get me wrong, I am not saying you have to make a choice between diet or exercise. Exercise can be fantastic for increasing your energy levels, it improves your physical appearance, increases muscle mass, reduces depression and increases your overall sense of well-being. What I am saying is one step at a time.

Diet or exercise?When you embark on a TFR diet, your body has a lot to adjust to. You have to take it a day at a time allowing your body space to adapt to the process of ketosis.

There is no harm in the beginning by taking a lovely walk, or perhaps a gentle swim but moderate/heavy exercise should be left until you are further down the line with your weight loss.

Also remember that when you are on a TFR diet, the calorie intake is restricted and if you are working out or following an exercise routine you must monitor your calories closely. You must keep your calories above 450 to stay medically safe. If you are exercising and your calories fall below this, you risk the chance of going into starvation mode; in simple terms, anything you put in to your body, your body will cling on to and you will stop losing weight.

Diet or exercise?I began an exercise regime once I had lost the majority of my weight. I felt ready to start a new chapter in my journey and so I took up running. I started very slowly, building up carefully and used my FitBit to monitor my calories in and out, having an extra pack when needed.

To summarise, when it comes to the question of “is exercise or diet better”… do both mindfully, but put more emphasis on your diet.
